Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps – Something New (2023)
Formerly a member of bands Carmen Gray and The Impersonators, veteran musician Tom Tikka takes on a solo project as Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps. With only two years behind him playing with the “make-believe band” The Missing Hubcaps, award-winning and chart-placing Tikka is gaining international acclaim as a solo performer. From Authority Magazine, VENTS Magazine, Ballroom Blitz, Lost In The Manor, Music For All and many others, Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps is making waves on a global scale. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Something New’.
Joined by his producer Janne Saksa, ‘Something New’ is a love song wrapped in a delicate but kaleidoscopic soft rock sonic wrapper. With a nostalgic flair, Tikka dips into the whimsical 80s and 90s rock sounds; however, a sprinkle of contemporary indie-pop flows from the intriguing instrumentation. In other words, I can easily hear ‘Something New’ blasting alongside Christopher Cross as well as Ed Sheeran – familiar but fresh.
Reminding me slightly of Christopher Cross’s ‘Arthur’s Theme’ with its piano-driven tenderness, ‘Something New’ is sprinkled with a delicate intimacy. Interestingly, while Christopher Cross sang about the optimistic power of finding love regardless of the obstacles, Tom Tikka hits us from the other side of the love spectrum. Instead of falling in love, ‘Something New’ captures the situation where you choose to leave the relationship.
“Relationships can be hard. They are easy and perfect only in Disney fantasies and fairytales. ‘Something New’ is about that utterly sad moment when you realise it’s time to leave the person you love behind. The song is a testament to the fact that love in itself is not enough. You also need compatibility.” – Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps on ‘Something New’
Sincere, sentimental and honest with the rich vocals touching the topic of love in a kaleidoscopic swirl, listening to ‘Something New’ is a soul-soaring experience.
