Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps – Wrecking Ball (ft Lappe & Nicklas) (2024)

Many artists are featured regularly on The Other Side Reviews (that’s us). From punk rockers 9 o’clock Nasty to folk singer Luna Keller, pop star Edie Yvonne and pop-punk Love Ghost; yet, there is none so notable as Tom Tikka! A former Sony/BMG songwriter and award-winning musician, Tom Tikka is most well-known for his work with the rock group Carmen Gray. In 2013, he formed the duo The Impersonators, and several years later he stepped out with solo ambitions – it is this solo project that keeps us intrigued. Not to say his other groups are any less exciting, it’s just that Tom Tikka is a fascinating character in groups and on his own.

Following his critically acclaimed single ‘California Smile’, a collaboration between Tikka and The Star Prairie Project’s Nolan Chew Jr, Tikka releases his new track ‘Wrecking Ball’. Stepping away from an Americana-inspired sound, ‘Wrecking Ball’ shifts to the alternative rock style reminiscent of Carmen Gray – I suppose this makes sense as he is joined by Carmen Gray’s lead vocalist Nicklas Nyman and lead guitarist Lauri “Lappe” Holopainen.

Tapping into vintage 90s rock, ‘Wrecking Ball’ is a nostalgic rush of kaleidoscopic music sweeping past your face and ruffling your hair. As the music slips behind you, your body is lifted or possibly dragged into a dark bubble of sound. A moment of reckless rambunctiousness as you are fully immersed in Janne Saska’s pounding drums, Lappe’s scorching guitars, and Tikka’s bold bass. Swirling about in a giddy haze, you can barely catch your breath – a true wrecking ball of sound; however, Nicklas Nyman’s vocals embrace you with comfortable warmth and searing rock chaos.

Confident and chaotic, the world trembles as ‘Wrecking Ball’ hits your ears… then again, an intricate clarity offers a harmonious classic rock symphony. Flipping from frenzied ferocity to rich soothing, Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps evoke every emotion with skin-tingling delight in ‘Wrecking Ball’.
