Tom Murry – Lay Me Low (2022)

Embracing his natural talent for music at a young age, Tom Murry was learning to play the guitar at age 12 and teaching people how to play the guitar at age 15. Since then, his passion for music has been a constant despite his job being the CEO of Calvin Klein Inc and Venezuelan designer brand Raul Peñaranda LLC. Now, he is fulfilling his lifelong dream of creating original music as a solo artist. This is my introduction to Murry, but his praises are already being sung by Sinusoidal Music, Send Me Your Ears, Phantom Power Music, and many more. Come with us as we dip our toes into his single ‘Lay Me Low’.

The title track off Murry’s latest four-track EP, ‘Lay Me Low’ is a pure country tune with strong Americana flavours. With his full-bodied baritone, impressive guitar skills and toe-tapping melody, there is a strong leaning toward the sounds of Johnny Cash. This is particularly noted with his vocal execution homing in on the obscurity of Cash’s distinctive voice. Inject the enchanting piano and you have an interesting acoustic-inspired interplay between electric and organic instrumentation.

Unlike the other tracks on Lay Me Low, this single is more upbeat, high-paced and light-hearted country. His take on ‘Amazing Grace’ is fantastic, as is the ballad ‘Linda’ and the poignant rock track ‘If You Take A Man’s Life’. In ‘Lay Me Low’, there is a sense of joviality with rough edges making the track rather raw but in a good way. I’m not the greatest fan of country or Americana music, but Tom Murry may be swaying me to that genre.
