Tom Minor – It’s The Wind, Stupid! (2024)
Life can appear humdrum, mundane and, let’s face it, quite dull sometimes; however, the surface can hide a swirling vortex of tragedy, decadence, ferocity and aggression. Singer-songwriter Tom Minor takes his melodic spoon, shoves it through the top layer and finds the grittiness beneath. He ever so elegantly shares this kaleidoscopic sliver of, well let’s face it exciting endeavours with the masses. So, if you have a secret lurking beneath, then you best steer clear of Tom Minor, then again, it’s near impossible to shake off his infectiously insatiable music.
Following his well-received indie-rock single ‘The Bad Life’, Tom Minor finds the line between old-school indie-rock and Britpop in ‘It’s The Wind, Stupid!’. Recorded and produced with Teaboy Palmer, ‘It’s The Wind, Stupid!’ is a concoction of crashing drums, slips of piano, and soaring guitars. Interestingly, while there is a bold bounce in its Britpop sound, the kaleidoscopic tune retains a barebones starkness and simplicity. Beautifully textured, listening to ‘It’s The Wind, Stupid!’ is like walking down an empty tunnel with each instrument threading along culminating in harmonic soothing.
Digging further beneath the surface, ‘It’s The Wind, Stupid!’ taps into the decadence of affairs. London banker Sarah has the perfect surface level with young suburban non-professional Tommy as the gritty secret. What began as a chance encounter developed into a casual affair, then seemingly honest, decent and charming Angela slipped into a “casual turned casual after-hours evening”; lurking where angels fear to read, the decadent evening took place somewhere between “the Square Mile and track back to the Home Counties.”
So, what’s the big deal? An affair met with a one-night excursion; hardly something to write home about… yet, how would it come across on the clean surface? Deliciously eerie with a scandalous sheen about it, it has some impact. Then again, it’s just the wind carefully caressing your cheek before sending off into non-existence. Come on, it’s the wind stupid!
