Tom Minor – Is Everything Okay? (2024)
With a magnetic presence, engaging music and poetic lyricism, singer-songwriter Tom Minor wraps meaningful words with emotional indie-rock flair. While he might fall into the indie-rock genre, a distinctive style sees Minor weaving elements of Britpop, smidgeons of soul, peeps of punk, and even an RnB shimmer here and there. After several years in the entertainment industry, the UK-based artist now splits his time between London and Helsinki concocting a smoosh of Nick Cave, The Kinks, Blur and The Who. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Is Everything Okay?’
Following his well-received tracks ‘It’s The Wind, Stupid!’ and ‘The Bad Life’, ‘Is Everything Okay?’ delves into profound inner reflection by begging the question, “If you’re unhappy and you don’t know it, what good is it?” A random question posed by “well-meaning bystanders…”, Minor’s new single has you contemplating your life in general. He explains:
“A random question… like the one described in the song title may start you contemplating how you really are and how things should be in your life. So be careful with what you hear and how you answer…”
While the tune harbours a sense of insightful self-reflection, it is more a narrative from a concerned friend. Lyrically, Minor continues to ask if everything is okay reiterating the need to assess your being, but with the reminder that this constant question is to help and not frustrate. Moreover, Minor’s rich vocals adopt a simpler, gruffer, rawer and more intimate tone; it’s like a comforting hug where you know this person is really invested in your well-being.
The words are weighty despite being delivered with a lighter quality and it is this almost juxtaposition adding depth to the song. Produced with Teaboy Palmer, ‘Is Everything Okay?’ oozes light-hearted bounce and toe-tapping, head-bopping, smile-inducing sentiments. Charming and happy, the indie-rock palette swells with bright colours and wistful whimsy. A moving guitar meets dynamic drums with a charming piano bringing up the rear. For me, however, it is the folk-tinged harmonica bringing a little something extra to ‘Is Everything Okay?’
Taken from his recently released debut album Eleven Easy Pieces On Anger & Disappointment, Tom Minor astounds us once again with his sincerity, originality, innovation and satisfying eclecticism in ‘Is Everything Okay?’
