Tom Craven – New Signals (2023)

Compared to the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, Incubus, Ed Sheeran, James Blunt, Crowded House and The Smiths, it is clear singer-songwriter Tom Craven has a flair for originality, versatility and innovation. With over a decade in the music industry, Craven has released numerous albums and singles to critical acclaim, as well as touring extensively through the UK and the USA. I guess it’s safe to say, he has garnered a loyal following but Craven continues to turn heads with ever-evolving music. Featured on We Write About Music, Less Than 1000 Followers, Find No Enemy, Music For All, and many more, this naturally talented musician is described as charming, reflective, welcoming and beautiful. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘New Signals’.

Following his well-received song ‘Let It Fall (My December)’, Tom Craven finds the delicate blend of old-school folk and modern-day pop ballads in ‘New Signals’. Soft, mellow and flowing, ‘New Signals’ grabs you by the wrist and leads you across the sonic dancefloor. Charming and heartfelt, there is a richness in the track embracing you in its melodic warmth; however, a tinge of melancholy appears to slither beneath the instrumentation brought forward only by Craven’s vulnerable vocals.

As a solo artist and a member of Tom Craven and The Chapters, Craven understands how to draw musicians together in a harmonic whole – something that is elegantly executed in ‘New Signals’. Collaborating with long-time friends Rachel and Chilcraft on vocals and cello, as well as Josh Hammond and Alex Lee-Richards, ‘New Signals’ can easily have you smiling while simultaneously trying to hold back tears.

As I mentioned, there is a melancholic vibe through the single tugging at your heartstrings in a desperate way. Penned as an “anthem for those who have loved and lost over the turbulent past few years”, it makes sense to have a painful intimacy fluttering through ‘New Signals’. The thing is, just as the single is about loss and challenging times, there is hopeful empowerment as Craven chronicles a positive leap forward in mind, body and spirit.

In addition to the single, Tom Craven released an official music video for ‘New Signals’. You can view the video below or via Craven’s YouTube channel.
