Todger – Ancient Rome (2021)

Greatly influenced by iconic rock bands Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, Todger is a quartet bringing old-school rock to the 21st century. Formed almost two decades ago when Christian (vocals), Jack (guitar) and Hugh (bass) met as drunken university students, Todger has quite a few years of experience to their name. When Bart (drums) joined the trio in 2012, they knew their lineup was complete and had another drinking buddy.

During these decades, the quartet has performed across the UK in both small and established venues. In addition to their energetic performances, the group has featured on Less Than 1000 Followers, Roadie Music, Edgar Allan Poets and various other international blogs. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘Ancient Rome’.

Following their single ‘Blind Watchers of the Sky’ and cover of ‘The Devil Went Down To Georgia’, Todger share a classic rock meets heavy metal style in ‘Ancient Rome’. A powerful melodic arrangement, dynamic guitars mix with pounding drums to create a hard-hitting sound. Tipped immediately into a whirlpool of sound, the track’s ambience is heavy but with a tinge of contemporary charm about it. Sure, the vocals have a similarity to Nick Cave, but I bet that harsh grittiness is charming to some; it is certainly evocative.

While the track adopts a truly “in your face” tone with a brutal rawness, ‘Ancient Rome’ is an intelligent and “not in your face” single with a historical theme. Todger shares that ‘Ancient Rome’ is “…a collage of half-remembered facts from school history lessons, Wikipedia worm-holing and a general fascination in the unreliability of popular history.” Yes, modern history isn’t exactly Romulus and Remus or Ceasar and Brutus, but Todger showed their quirkiness and depth in this “…big, dumb rock song.”

In addition to the single, Todger released a music video for ‘Ancient Rome’. Note: this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
