Three Smiles Wide – Blah Blah Blah (2024)

If Oasis, The Streets and Dodgy were to meet in a dark alley for what we consider a brawl, but then when you take a closer look, they’re all sitting about eating Greggs pies with chips on the side – this is Three Smiles Wide. Adding a Welsh flavour to the cosy situation, Colin Greer (vocals and guitars), Huw Jones (bass and backing vocals), and Sam Peric (drums and backing vocals) create a brand of indie-rock meets grunge meets alternative rock. Technically formed in 2011, the lads slathered audiences with a unique sprinkling of the Three Smiles Wide sound; however, it is not exclusively local audiences that enjoy their music. Reaching far beyond the UK borders, Three Smiles Wide blares through international speakers building an almost cult-like following.

Following their self-titled debut EP in 2015, ‘Blah Blah Blah’ is the lads’ re-emergence on the UK rock music scene. After a decade of no singles (or at least almost a decade), Three Smiles Wide is back with a satirical tongue-in-cheek expression of modern society. An eager interplay between existential issues and individual perceptions, ‘Blah Blah Blah’ is a social commentary on the political sphere. The band explain:

“A song about political disillusionment… we hope you love our ode to democracy and the pitch-perfect political panpipes we like to blow through when sounding the wings of change on our tiny island…”

The idea of composing an “election-worthy theme song” might herald ideas of powerful, positive, hand-on-the-heart tribute to the country – the truth is, that’s a bunch of malarky. Unless you are the “rich getting richer”, the chances are ‘Blah Blah Blah’ is all you hear when the powers that be begin speaking.

Encapsulating the slash of indifference and desperation of everyday drudgery, ‘Blah Blah Blah’ is the next bill you place at the bottom of the mailbag. Yet, in its gruff distortion, the pounding drums, searing guitar and gruff vocals are significant, sensational and what we all wish to yell at whoever will listen. Ripping the band-aid off, Three Smiles Wide air the cut forcing everyone to see the dripping wound with the hope of a salve to fix it.
