Those Heavy Souls – Everything’s Changing (2024)

Twirl a swaggering splash of The Verve in a pool of Kasabian, and hit up a flit of Oasis, the overall drink would be Those Heavy Souls. This might be our introduction to musician Craig Lewis, but he is no newbie to the music scene. As frontman of the indie-rock group COLUMBIA, Lewis was turning heads with energetic melodies; however, an unfortunate disbanding in 2022 did not see the group hit those stadiums which they would have rocked. Over the past two years, the Cardiff-based musician has continued working on a separate sound, and today his solo project reaches our ears as Those Heavy Souls.

Recorded and produced by Andrew Sanders and Charlie Francis (mastering) at Cardiff’s Kings Road Studios, Those Heavy Souls retains the heaviness of COLUMBIA but with a twist leaning toward an eclectic indie-rock sound in his debut ‘Everything’s Changing’. Joined by Steven Kenward (lead guitar and bass) and Sanders (drums), a rush of alternative rock fills the track. Yet, just as there is a typical rock style, interspersed breaks, filled with off-kilter drums and bass, punch with an earthy roots-rock beat.

Shifts between rock with the holes of, well it’s not really definable but a kind of percussion break, not only enhance the sonic rollercoaster ride but intensity the message of ‘Everything’s Changing’. What it says on the tin, the track is about inexplorable change. Penned by Craig Lewis, he guides us along a journey from one reality to another. Interestingly, while a gritty grunge of darkness lingers in the tune and his vulnerable vocals, a sense of empowerment exudes with self-discovery, acceptance and hope.
