Third Girl From The Left – The Mountain and The Wave (2021)

Already having featured on The Other Side Reviews twice, we are wise to the ways of Third Girl From The Left. Yet, while some artists stagnate in their sound this artist constantly keeps us guessing. Bringing together the sounds of Portishead, Lorde and Kate Bush, the UK-based songstress has an eclectic approach to music. Featured on BBC Introducing, Fresh On The Net, FV Music Blog, Get To The Chorus and Sonic Breakfast (to name a few), Third Girl is reaching audiences on a global level. The latest addition to her discography is ‘The Mountain and the Wave’.

Following her single ‘Here Am I’ (read our review here), ‘The Mountain and the Wave’ adopts a darker and more menacing sound. I might say that the track represents the uncertainty and frustration of living in a Covid-19 pandemic. The emotional effects of lockdown personified perhaps? Then again, that’s just me overanalysing the intense bass and dynamic organ in its haunting soundscape. I like to overanalyse.

When speaking about ‘The Mountain and the Wave’, Third Girl shares that it is inspired by the Greek mythological tale of Tyro. She explains that “…I discovered the story through artwork by Scotland’s Margaret MacDonald. It tells the story of a married woman racked with desire for the river go Enupeus, but is tricked and seduced by a disguised lust-fuelled Posidon…it explores the power of addiction and how taking back that power must come from within.” Powerful in both message and sound, it seems.

Yes, this is the third time Third Girl From The Left has reached my ears and it proves she is boundary-breaking. Each track exposes separate elements of the human soul, point out her fragility and strength, and bring something new to my playlist. An outstanding melodic arrangement, ‘The Mountain and the Wave’ is like nothing I have heard this year…and that’s a good thing! I can’t wait for more from this talented musician.
