Theo Adler – Guide To The Living (2023)
Inspired by the likes of Radiohead, Rolling Stones and Gorillaz, Theo Adler should have a sound speaking to audiences from all genres – and he does, even though I only have a couple of singles as references. Being a relatively new act (at least according to Spotify), he could be considered a minnow in a sonic sea; however, Adler is sure to stand out among the sharks with their exciting music. Come with us as we dip into his debut single ‘Guide To The Living’.
Preceding his sophomore track ‘Big Fucking Rocket’, ‘Guide To The Living’ introduced listeners to the UK-based Theo Adler. A collaborative single with Luke Potashnick at his studio, The Wool Hall – previously used by Joni Mitchell, Tears For Fears, The Smiths, The Rolling Stones and Van Morrison – ‘Guide To The Living’ draws together elements of indie-pop, dream-pop and pop-rock. Interestingly, while there is a strong contemporary pop vibe, a nostalgic flair flows through the debut song. I suppose, something quite fresh but with a familiar tone.
Pop definitely leads ‘Guide To The Living’ but I hear strong rock vibes slivering into the track with the bold guitars. Steady drums (courtesy of Tom The Lion) build a strong foundation for the melody as multi-instrumentalist Adler’s eclectic keyboards enhance the obscurity of the song. Add Adler’s vocals teetering atop the melody, and you have something that is both toe-tapping and soul-stirring.
With the aim of resonating with listeners on an intimate level, Adler certainly captured my heart with ‘Guide To The Living’. He shares that “it excites me to make songs that might give someone the feeling that they almost forget…” I have but one complaint when it comes to ‘Guide To The Living’: it is far too short.
