The Young Scones – The Muse (2024)
With a reputation for electrifying melodies, confident stage presence and engaging lyricism, Canada-based The Young Scones are quickly establishing themselves as one of the most intriguing rock bands not only in their local Toronto but across the globe. Formed in 2022 by four friends, the group deliver high-quality sounds while delving deeper into the root of reality in its grit and glory. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The Muse’.
Drawing together elements of The Pixies, The Clash, and The Beatles, The Young Scones capture vintage raucous in the punk meets rock meets power-pop style. Yet, just as the band dragged us back about 40 years, The Young Scones thread a link to 2000s Arctic Monkeys and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club transcending eras, styles and generations. Moreover, a modern-day rock ‘n’ roll edginess clasps contemporary style demonstrating how powerful music is beyond space, distance and time; particularly when exploring ageless themes of existential issues.
A taster of The Young Scones’ upcoming full-length album Sconism (set for release in 2025), ‘The Muse’ is a powerful rush of music from Gary McGuinness (lead vocals and guitar), Zac Lennon (lead guitar and vocals), Brian Derro (bass and vocals), and Marcelo Maltez (drums). In a sonic tapestry, crashing drums meet a bold bass with scorching guitars travelling across in a harmonic symphony. Interestingly, while each layer binds perfectly in the tune, it is the individuality of each instrument that demands attention enhancing the rush of soul-stirring music.
Melodically, ‘The Muse’ is sensational, but it is its lyricism that adds true weightiness to the single. Weighty and profound, The Young Scones explain:
“’The Muse’ offers an existential and introspective view of one’s place in the world, especially during times of loneliness and emotional struggle. It speaks to the challenges of facing inner darkness and unhappiness where finding a purpose can feel elusive… When the weight of the world feels unbearable, ‘The Muse’ serves as a sanctuary – a source of comfort, strength, and connection amid the solitude.”
