The Y Axes – Save Anyone (2022)

Over the last few years, we have all been faced with multiple situations where we want to help people, yet feel powerless and unable to do anything. These emotions have been captured by The Y Axes and turned into the driving anthemic single ‘Save Anyone’. The single not only brings these emotions to life, but also marks the start of a metamorphosis as the band transitions from The Y Axes to Gloomy June.

As Alexi Rose Belchere (vocals), Devin Nelson (guitar, vocals), Jack Sunquist (bass) and Ash Hyatt (drums) bring a feeling of helplessness to our ears, they offer a greater understanding that the uncertainty you feel is okay. The band first started playing together at the height of the San Francisco tech boom and have been growing as a band and individuals ever since. This growth brought the realisation that the stark and logical touch of the band no longer applied to their sound, kicking off the upcoming metamorphosis.

The guitar that opens ‘Save Anyone’ instantly grabs your attention and hooks you. There is a movement to the guitar that has you bopping around to the sound, before the drums roll in and get you lost in their indie rock sound. Leading up to the chorus, the drums drop slightly, before rising up with the guitar for a push of energy. There is an extremely catchy vibe to the music that you just want to give into without any worries. The melody has a steady pace that keeps pushing you into the single and shivers with energy at times, while you rock out to the sound. There are some electronic tones that hit later in the track bringing a new edge to the sound.

After the guitar has hooked its talons into you, Belchere’s vocals are a shining light that you are drawn to like a moth to the flame. Her voice has a light emo pop-rock feel to it that enhances the emotions woven into the lyrics. She is able to bring the emotions we have all felt in the past few years to life, but lifts the burden of helplessness from our shoulders. On the chorus, she reaches out a helping hand that lets you know you are more than these feelings of uncertainty. While the lyrics touch on some seriously sad emotions, the single is very uplifting overall.

The Y Axes touches on feelings of helplessness before lifting up the pressure of these emotions and filling you with light energy in ‘Save Anyone’. The music hooks you from the first guitar note as it drives you into the soundscape. The vocals are light as they pluck at your emotions, before lifting the weight of them from your shoulders.
