The Wyze – Black & White (2020)

If you need a feel-good single that uses 80s alt-pop and funky rhythms, look no further than ‘Black & White’ by The Wyze. As the single talks about a girl who keeps you on edge, it lifts you up into the dancing grooves of the soundscape. Through the music, you understand that the girl is dangerous, but feel a pull and want to be around her.

Chase Ellestad (vocals, guitar) and Chris Cheong (synths, keys) are the duo behind the music. The pair met during Miami Music Week and became best friends. Making music together in their homes in Toronto, they pump you full of good vibes while giving you a sound that you can easily get down to.

‘Black & White’ has you in a funky mood from the first note as you are hit with a lively vibe. This infectious and lively energy only gets more powerful as the single processes. The beats of the melody have your body moving or, at the very least, your foot tapping. The swing of the melody combines funky flows with some shimmering pop sensibilities that hook into your brain and will not budge. Through the upbeat vibe of the music, you are filled with a sense of joy even as the lyrics highlight how the girl in the story is dangerous.

Ellestad’s vocals are a second injection of lively energy when they enter. There is a bounce to his performance that merges with the backing vocals for a dancing vibe. Later in the single, his performance takes a slower turn as the lyrics acknowledge the negative impact of the relationship. The change in vocals is complemented by a change in the melody that hits a more electronic stride that has an edge of dream pop to it. This slower music then bubbles back to the fun tones to end the single on a high lively note.

The Wyze has you moving to the lively and upbeat tones of ‘Black & White’ while considering wanting to be with someone who is dangerous. The melody has a funky vibe that melds with dream pop to pump a dancing energy into your veins. This matches the vocals that get you moving to their groove and lost in a twirl of fun they bring.
