The Would Be’s – That’s How It Gets You (2025)

Formed in the 1990s, Irish group The Would Be’s discovered they had a bit of a knack for good tunes, establishing themselves as a name in the rock music scene; however, not all good things last – in fact, some fade into the ether never to return. Not The Would Be’s though! They might have taken a bit of a break, but the embers of passionate music were stoked, and in 2012, the group sparked again with their knack for a good song. We came across The Would Be’s last year, October to be exact, and today we dip our toes into their discography once more with the single, ‘That’s How It Gets You’.

Following the well-received single, ‘Stay Tuned’, The Would Be’s take their first step into 2025 with ‘That’s How It Gets You’. I’m unsure whether ‘That’s How It Gets You’ is a hopeful, uplifting song, or one of despair and poignant “oh bloody hell”. On one side, the rich vocals sing about giving things time, not opting for complete disregard; however, the flip side offers lyrics of how life gets you down, and even if it’s not yet tragic, you should just give it some time before the worst happens. A see-saw of highs and lows, ‘That’s How It Gets You’ waivers from optimism and acceptance to vulnerable discontent and “what’s the point” attitudes.

Lyrically and thematically, ‘That’s How It Gets You’ saunters through the haze of existential confusion, and the melody is as intriguing. Taken from the upcoming album, HindZeitgeist, the bold bass, pulsating drums, and soaring guitar take you on an upbeat, kaleidoscopic journey. Drifting through vintage power-pop, a glimmer of smiles and sighs of relief step forth; then again, the brightness and bounce falter along exasperated vulnerability where darkness is merely a breath away.
