The Would Be’s – Stay Tuned (2024)

With years of experience that any band would give their right arm for, The Would Be’s have enchanted audiences for decades. Founded in the 90s, the Irish fivesome captured the eye of John Peel, Morrissey, and Steve Lemacq, as well as being constant features on NME and Melody Maker. In 2012, the group reformed with their well-received singles ‘Let’s Play Dumb’ and ‘Ivy Avenue’. Their confident performances with infectious music quickly garnered a global following. From the 2012 singles to 2017’s ‘Tempt Fate’ and 2023’s ‘Two Wrongs (Made Me Feel Alright), The Would Be’s concocted a unique rock style with both vintage and contemporary vibes placing themselves as an eclectic, pioneering act.

Alright, very brief history over, let’s get down to what we’re here to chat about – The Would Be’s new single ‘Stay Tuned’.

Following the well-received single ‘Two Wrongs (Made Me Feel Alright)’, ‘Stay Tuned’ is The Would Be’s first stomp into 2024. Similar to ‘Two Wrongs (Made Me Feel Alright)’, a strong leaning to yesteryear’s indie-rock sound is heard, but the new track has far more complexity and intricate composition. Known for their quirky melodies, ‘Stay Tuned’ breathes duality oscillating between tumultuousness and stoic sounds. The combination of drums, guitars and bass bind in harmony, yet there is a distorted individuality infused in a discomforting (while still comfortable) melody.

A song that could easily be the fist-pumping, body-swaying, singalong song at a festival or a tune you discover at an open mic night in some dingy club, ‘Stay Tuned’ is weighty, rich and hard-hitting… but in a soft way. The dulcet vocals twirl about your heart with wistful energy; however, it is the interspersed horns that up the ante with its obscure blast. Rock and indie flecked by soul, ‘Stay Tuned’ has The Would Be’s taking an experimental, off-kilter tone and I love it!
