The Wandering Off – Hey There (2023)

Take Alanis Morrissette, add a dash of Letters To Cleo and a splash of Sheryl Crowe, what do you have? You have the Canadian band The Wandering Off. A husband-wife affair, The Wandering Off blends the raw power of Kyle Corner’s guitar with the even rawer strength of Emily Corner’s vocals. This is my introduction to The Wandering Off but they are already receiving critical acclaim from press across the globe being described as “…a duo known for its creations that caresses the hearts of listeners…” (Sinusoidal Music), “…set to capture your attention…” (Canadian Beats), and “…a fully-rounded musical experience that pushes the right emotional and physical buttons…” (Vents Magazine).

Preceding their single ‘F Off’, ‘Hey There’ is The Wandering Off’s debut single opening 2023 with a bang. The first single off their upcoming self-titled twelve-track album, ‘Hey There’ leans toward the sounds of 90s pop-rock with nostalgic flair. Yet, while you get a strong Sheryl Crowe vibe from the single, Emily and Kyle bring a slice of modern-day pop-rock into the melody. Familiar but fresh, I suppose – the vintage with a super cool tinge of contemporary-ness.

Pounding drums elegantly meld with dynamic guitars resulting in a hard-hitting but also mellifluous melody. The thing is, while Kyle is rocking that guitar, it is Emily’s vocals that bring a special obscurity to ‘Hey There’. As I mentioned, there is a Sheryl Crowe vibe but an underlying brashness reminiscent of Courtney Love hides in the slightly off-kilter tones. While the veteran musicians have a sophisticated knowledge of music production, a gritty imperfection makes their music and ‘Hey There’ sublime. As Emily sings, “you can’t please ‘em all, ‘cause when you jump you fall.”

In addition to the single, The Wandering Off released an official music video for ‘Hey There’. You can view the video below or on their official YouTube channel.
