The Underclass – Hometown (2022)

Bringing audiences hard-hitting indie-rock with a cheeky wink and big grin, UK-based The Underclass are a band not to be pigeon-holed. Hailing from Stoke-on-Trent, the guitar-driven quintet formed in late 2018 and soon found themselves gaining a following with successful singles and gigs. Performing at The Cavern Club, Jimmy’s and the O2 Academy, The Underclass have a reputation for energetic, engaging performances; however, they are not one-trick ponies. Just as grand as their gigs, their studio recordings are as outstanding. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Hometown’.

Described by Right Chord Music as a band that manage to “craft traditional influences and enough authenticity to keep their fans invested”, the lads effortlessly turn heads with their originality. Following their well-received track ‘The One’, ‘Hometown’ has a more obscure element to their upbeat indie-rock design. While I can compare The Underclass to Oasis, the similarity is not evident in ‘Hometown’ at all. Far more genuine, raw, honest and bold, there is a warmth to the arrangement that oozes innovation and individuality. Dynamic guitars, pounding drums and Wilson’s vocals seem to bring a warm, fuzzy joy as they sing about “doing it for my hometown”.

“’Hometown’ is a song heavily based around our roots. It tells the story of going back to where you’re from, what made you, who you are and how you should never forget your roots. Many have described the tune as a people’s anthem. Which for us is probably the best way to describe this song with its meaningful lyrics, huge guitars and groove-filled bass and drums.” – The Underclass on ‘Hometown’

While the song is anthemic and I can easily see the group play it at a sold-out show, there is also an intimacy woven through the sonic tapestry. You can shout out loud that you did it for your town, but a simplicity exists in ‘Hometown’ where you want to hold it close and feel its radiant warmth. Either way, I foresee much more success for The Underclass and can’t wait to hear what else they have up their sleeves.
