The Trusted – The Lightning (2024)
Trailblazers, pioneers, completely unpredictable but always promising a sincere sense of familiarity – this is The Trusted. Poetically delving into the profound intricacies of life, the UK-based band oscillate between existential light and dark with an already intricate arrangement also shifting from grit to glory. Interestingly, as poignant and significant as their melodies may be, Tom Cunningham (vocals), Fin Cunningham (bass), Dale Holt-Mead (guitar), and David Batchelor (drums) act as the trusted friend in a sonic swirl of breath-taking tones. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The Lightning’.
The Trusted left us a couple of months ago with ‘Miracle Face’ – a track so eloquently looking at obsession and love but lingering with the deadly consequences. Alright, maybe not deadly as in mortal peril-like, but dark loss, tragedy and “oh that sucks”. The lads once again explore our inner emotions in ‘The Lightning’ but it’s not so “that sucks” as “well, it kinda sucks but it’s not all that bad.”
“The song delves into the introspective battle we all face when looking in the mirror, confronting our true potential. It’s a powerful reminder that within each of us lies a spark of brilliance – our very own bolt of lightning. Too often, we hold it back. ‘The Lightning’ calls on us to unleash that energy and embrace our greatness… the track is an electrifying exploration of ego, self-worth, and inner greatness.” – Tom Cunningham on ‘The Lightning’
Retaining their signature sifting through a person’s raw existence, ‘The Lightning’ is a walk from tricky tragedy to empowerment both lyrically and melodically. As with ‘Miracle Face’, a strong leaning toward nostalgic Peter Gabriel lingers within the tune; however, a unique sound that is no one but The Trusted brings contemporary indie-pop to synth-tinged 80s pop. Crashing drums match a bold bass with soaring guitars streaking across in kaleidoscopic shimmers – a true lightning bolt flashing through the sonic sky. Add Cunningham’s rich vocals and you’re walking along with a massive grin on your face prepared to take on the world.
