The Trusted – Self Destruct (2024)

As Genesis sang, “We live in a land of confusion…”, and while it was evident in the 1980s, it is far too present in every aspect of the 21st century. In a world of uncertainty, insanity and utter chaos around every corner, we need a sanctuary – enter The Trusted. A pioneer in the indie-rock music scene, the UK-based quartet lead the way with their poetic lyrics wrapped in soul-stirring melodies. We came across The Trusted a few years ago and while we constantly expected them to peak, each song lifts the bar. So, cross your fingers, hold your breath and prepare to jump into their insatiable discography.

In the critically acclaimed EP Lost Soul, The Trusted pulled us across life sliding through different genres and emotional fields. From indie-pop ‘Marrow’ to a rush of hard alternative rock in ‘Doomsday’, the lads oscillate from the dark and light sides of life in an innovative, diverse manner. Following this critically acclaimed EP, The Trusted released their new single ‘Self Destruct’.

Fully aware of the instant gratification society in which we find ourselves, Tom Cunningham (vocals), Fin Cunningham (bass), Dale Holt-Mead (guitar), and Dave Batchelor (drums) tap into humanity’s ever-present self-destructive nature. In your 20s, you rush ahead seeking excitement in all areas; however, as we reach the level of extremes it might be a little too far. Tom Cunningham explains:

“’Self Destruct’ is a song about self-sabotage. It’s a tune concerned with the desire for self-destruction… While people love to party, often we take it too far. ‘Self Destruct’ delves into the experiences of an individual who is pushing their body and mind to dangerous extremes for the sake of a fleeting thrill.”

Profound and complex, the lads flutter through the dank, gritty, “this place is screwed up” areas of life; and ‘Self Destruct’ is a rush across that fiery tunnel. Reaching further into a punk rock style, The Trusted perfectly capture a whiplash toss from pillar to post. If you can imagine the world trembling beneath your feet as you run across in a hit of indescribable bliss, then you have ‘Self Destruct’. The pounding force of drums matches scorching guitars shaking the earth spurring you on. Tom Cunningham’s vocals, often rich and warm, become slightly frenzied like a voice in your head telling you to keep on going regardless of the consequences; then again, it is the bold richness that brings an intricate comfort within the madness.

An acid trip without the acid followed by a shot of vodka, The Trusted rattle about your cranium and coarse through your veins in the explosive ‘Self Destruct’.
