The Trusted – Marrow (2023)

Typically known for their expression of existential frustration, fear, anxiety, vulnerability and inner turmoil, The Trusted can have you contemplating the unfairness of society while twirling about in a hazy swirl. They gave a cry to “in-built doomsday clocks” in the single ‘Doomsday’ and realised that “life is basically an emotional/psychological boxing ring…” in ‘Terrible Fight’; however, as intensely intimate as The Trusted’s music may be, they have not yet delved into the intricacies of the human heart… until now. Following their well-received single ‘Doomsday’, Tom Cunningham (vocals), Dale Holt-Mead (guitar), Fin Cunningham (bass) and Dave Batchelor (drums) tackle the realm of “obsession and unrequited love” with ‘Marrow’.

Recorded, mixed and produced by Rees Broomfield of SS2 Studios, The Trusted adopts a less hard-hitting indie-rock sound with ‘Marrow’. Smoother and softer, a moving ballad oozes from the lads with Tom Cunningham’s vocals adopting a mellifluous tone. Harmonically interwoven, Batchelor’s drums keep the pace beneath with a rhythmic bass courtesy of Fin Cunningham. Guitar-driven, Holt-Mead’s guitar rhythmically weaves through the single; all bound together in a charming sonic wrapper.

Pioneers in their contemporary but vintage indie-rock style, The Trusted bring rock edginess to indie obscurity; however, ‘Marrow’ tinges the melody with pop sentimentality. The thing is, as soft as it may be, there is a biting sting nipping throughout ‘Marrow’. Cool and laidback, you might find this a beautiful love song to be played when cuddling beneath a blanket in front of a warm fire with your beloved – it’s not really. Within the mystical tune lies harsh vulnerability of obsessive and unrequited love. Frontman Tom Cunningham explains:

“’Marrow’ is a song about obsession. We don’t usually dive into the realm of love songs, but we decided to give it a shot… ‘Marrow’ delves into the concept of wanting to get under someone’s skin, to become inseparable from their very being. The song embodies the essence of exaggerated affection, restlessness, and unyielding devotion.”

Sincere and sentimental but simultaneously filled with heartache and melancholy, The Trusted catch our breaths with their new single ‘Marrow’.
