The Trusted – Arkansas (2022)

For the past four years, UK-based group The Trusted have graced our pages on a regular basis. Does this show we are big fans of the group? Maybe. Perhaps we just like writing about such a talented indie-rock quartet. The thing is, we are not the only ones who love typing up stuff about The Trusted. Featured on Less Than 1000 Followers, Pop Passion Blog, Tongue Tied Magazine, RGM Press and Sinusoidal Music, The Trusted has been described as magical, distinctive and passionate. The latest addition to their well-received discography is ‘Arkansas’.

With their irresistible charm, witty lyricism and infectious music, it is no wonder audiences across the globe are intoxicated with The Trusted. In ‘Arkansas’, the lads reflect on personal experiences bringing an intimacy to the tune. Using a personal narrative, Tom Cunningham and his crew tell the tale of “…wanting to escape and to find love again in a faraway place”. This emotional, introspective and heartfelt track is another example of The Trusted’s depth, innovation and, well, charm as artists.

Oozing intense intimacy in ‘Arkansas’, The Trusted open with soft, gentle instrumentation tipping you into a kaleidoscopic haze. Vulnerability, fear, anxiety and fragility all come across in the melodic arrangement. Layering guitars and drums atop a haunting mix of piano and strings really reflect the tender emotional state of the protagonist. Yet, while the harmonic instrumentation takes you on an up and down journey, it is Cunningham’s vocals that, once again, captivate me.

The melody can hold its own and express vulnerability in it; however, the lead vocals send a shiver down a listener’s spine. Slowly slithering into your ear, rocking about your brain, then removing all the air from your lungs, ‘Arkansas’ is a soul-soaring single not to be missed.
