The Trudy – Every Story Ever Told (2023)

Technically formed over 40 years ago, The Trudy gained notoriety as an underground post-punk band weaving their way into listeners’ ears for almost 20 years. The UK-based group blasted onto the scene with their debut album Volcano Fo Lé Ferret; however, the magic of The Trudy disappeared in 1996 as each member went on to pursue solo careers. The thing about music is it never disappears; it transcends time and space blossoming in your bosom each time you hear a new or familiar song. The Trudy rekindled this passion in 2006 bringing vintage sounds to new audiences.

In 2012, The Trudy released the well-received singles ‘Dirt Cheap Melody’ and ‘Bucolics Anonymous’ to critical acclaim. In 2016, the group’s single ‘Rocker Heart’ and full-length album Always Never Beautiful Forever. garnered an international following, and in 2021 the single ‘Dear Sancho’ ensnared the hearts of listeners, curators and everyone else who happened to stumble across The Trudy. In fact, The Other Side Reviews was one of the unsuspecting listeners to be lured into The Trudy’s musical clutches with ‘Dear Sancho’. The latest addition to their discography is the ‘Every Story Ever Told’.

The first release in two years, ‘Every Story Ever Told’ moves from the grimy veil of post-punk in ‘Dear Sancho’ to a lighter indie-rock tone with flits of folk slithering through the melody. Softer, gentler and calmer than previous work, ‘Every Story Ever Told’ could be an evolution in their work; then again, it may just be the mastery of The Trudy in its genre-diverse scheme tilting at us once again. Either way, it is a dreamy hush of mellifluous music woven about a charming ethereal haze.

Fusing the brashness of indie-rock as crashing drums are veiled by an acoustic guitar with bold bass, ‘Every Story Ever Told’ retains heaviness beneath the lilt of fresh percussion and Melissa Jo Heathcote’s fairy-like voice. Her wistful tone carries the dreamy lyrics sharing “the viewpoint of a mariner to evoke the beauty of the sea…” Yet, while the whimsied shimmer teeters atop the moving melody, a sense of haunting vulnerability exudes in the siren’s song.
