The Tiger Moths – Dreaming of Yesterday (2023)
Profound and poetic, UK-based fivesome The Tiger Moths bring a joyful bounce to thought-provoking lyrics. Drawing from the nostalgic sounds of the late 60s/early 70s Americana, The Tiger Moths add a modern-day rock vibe to their music. Already an established live act in the UK, their energy and enthusiasm have garnered a loyal following alongside festival performances. In fact, the band reached the Grand Final of the Isle of Wight Festival ‘New Blood Competition’ in 2021. Moreover, they are reaching international audiences with coverage from publications like Thoughts Words Action and Edgar Allan Poets. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘Dreaming of Yesterday’.
The first release since the EP How To Fall in 2019, ‘Dreaming of Yesterday’ captures a longing for the days of yesteryear in a melodic sonic capsule. Recorded in the band’s makeshift home studio, this single embraces folk-rock sounds but with a nostalgic sliver of pop coursing through the melody. While a folk song with its beats and toe-tapping tunes, a sprinkling of The Beatles makes ‘Dreaming of Yesterday’ a jovial, upbeat, smile-inducing track.
One element I find intriguing is the juxtaposition of intimate lyricism with cheerful melodies. The Tiger Moths explain that ‘Dreaming of Yesterday’ “is a song borne out of a longing for the past and reflections on what might have been…” – a relatable concept in the time when most of us are looking back and reviewing lost opportunities that might have led to a more satisfactory present. Oh yes, I know people who spend hours on Facebook comparing themselves to others and wondering what could have been if that something had come to pass.
While ‘Dreaming of Yesteryear’ is reflective and somewhat heart-breaking in its vulnerable exposition of human fragility, it has an optimism lurking in the sonic pool. The band further share that it “…is also about weathering hardship and, ultimately, hope for a new tomorrow”. Optimism shines through the melody as we laugh and cry with the group.
