The Theos Variant – Mechanical Organism (2024)

Eager to delve into the grittier, grungier, more avoided areas of life with existential themes wrapped in intricate melodies, The Theos Variant is a band to win your heart as they blow your mind (not literally, of course). Having released their first single last year, there is sophistication mixed with raw appeal making for mature but innocent productions. In 2023, The Theos Variant released the single ‘Wait’ followed by the well-received album Auras; today we take a look and listen to their new single ‘Mechanical Organism’.

The second step into 2024, ‘Mechanical Organism’ follows the critically acclaimed single ‘Vast’. Retaining the bold blend of alternative rock and hard rock in ‘Vast’, ‘Mechanical Organism’ showcases The Theos Variant’s rock-tinged sound. Yet, amidst the hard-hitting sound, vocalist Dan Lentz and multi-instrumentalist Geoff Haught toss a hit of industrial influences and melodic metal with extra flourish Heavier and more “in your face” than previous work, ‘Mechanical Organism’ twirls you about in a giddy haze but with profound darkness clutching from each side.

A cross-continental production, ‘Mechanical Organism’ was recorded in the USA – Columbus, Ohio, and Bloomington, Indiana; however, the magical production expertise of Germany-based Benedikt Hain (mixing and mastering) and Thomas Krottenthaler (additional engineering and mixing) gives the recording elegant charm… even though the melody is a bit gritty. I find this combination intriguing as it seems to bind the harsh appeal of German hard rock with a more US alternative rock flavour.

Melodically, the new single is astounding blending Lentz’s rich vocals with Haught’s scorching guitar, a rush of rock rage but with a soothing embrace twinkling within. Yet, ‘Mechanical Organism’s lyricism and theme make it far weightier. Vocalist Dan Lentz explains:

“’Mechanical Organism’ is about the collision between the organic and the artificial – how we are constantly navigating the line between humanity and the machines we build. This song represents a new chapter for us, both musically and thematically.”

In addition to the single, The Theos Variant released a music video for ‘Mechanical Organism’. You can view the video below and on their YouTube channel.
