The Tarrows – Gunfighter (2024)
You know those bands you never knew you needed until they hit you between the eyes with their insatiable sound? The Tarrows is one of them. Hailing from the UK, Matt Astell (vocals and lead guitar), Taylor Allerston (vocals and bass guitar), and Nate Brown (drums) draw together nostalgia and modern-day indie-rock for the masses. Inspired by life experiences, the more obscure the better, The Tarrows flood music with the core of humanity – at least seen through their eyes.
Following the well-received songs ‘HEY!’ and ‘While She Weeps’, The Tarrows take another step into 2024 with the second single of this year, ‘Gunfighter’. Shifting from the bold indie-rock crash of ‘HEY!’, ‘Gunfighter’ embraces the genre with a softer, gentler caress. Yet, while the pounding drums, dynamic guitars and rough vocals meld in a soothing melody, The Tarrows quickly turn the tables with a blast of lightning sending electricity down your spine.
Gentle, or at least as gentle as indie-rock sounds can be, you are warm to The Tarrows’ sound in a comfortable hug; then halfway through the track, the guitars soar, the drums crash and a drip of punk come to Astell’s vocals as they shove you into an insane sonic whirlwind. Tossed about from pillar to post, the kaleidoscope rush of music whips past your head as your body twists in a different direction. Organised chaos borne of laidback shimmers; ‘Gunfighter’ is the perfect melodic representation of a click of the gun before the bullet hits you square in the face.
A firm favourite among fans, the rambunctiousness of live shows oozes forth from the studio release so you can feel the room’s energy even though the song is simply streaming through your headphones. This is my introduction to The Tarrows, but I will definitely keep an eye on this up-and-coming trio – I recommend you do as well!
In addition to the single, The Tarrows released an official music video for ‘Gunfighter’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
