The Storeys – Self Love Affair (2024)

If Cyndi Lauper were to have a child with Take That, and it was adopted by Spandau Ballet, the chances are The Storeys would be that kid. Breathing life into 80s and 90s pop, The Storeys have a nostalgic sound without being too old-school. While the husband-wife duo have a wealth of experience in the music industry with various influences, styles and knowledge, The Storeys may be considered a minnow amidst sonic sharks, but they aren’t really. Come with me as I jump into the debut single, ‘Self Love Affair’.

Intending to create music to resonate with audiences, The Storeys look to transcend genres, time and generations finding a common thread that connects us all. In ‘Self Love Affair’, the pair tap into the intricate issue of self-love and self-worth – a theme that has more dark and light sides than film noir. In a light-hearted melody with upbeat, chilled-out vibes, ‘Self Love Affair’ appears as a warm, charming pop ballad. Yet, despite the full-bodied tenderness of the pair’s soulful vocals, a lilt of vulnerability flutters across capturing both empowerment and anxiety. The Storeys explain:

“We believe that self-love is the foundation of happiness and success. With ‘Self Love Affair’ we hope to inspire others to embrace their flaws, celebrate their strengths, and cultivate a deeper sense of self-acceptance. It’s time to start a love affair with ourselves.”

For me, 80s and 90s pop is easy on the ears with the laidback flair of The Storeys shoving it to the centre of my heart. Interestingly, ‘Self Love Affair’ is nostalgic but contemporary in its arrangement; easily digested by younger audiences with the smooth pop tone and simultaneously catching the ear of older audiences with the retro intonations. A shout-out has to be given to the interspersed saxophone glamming ‘Self Love Affair’ up with a soulful sassiness.

All in all, even after only three minutes I am a fan of The Storeys. I am eager to hear more from The Storeys and highly recommend you take a listen to their earworm as well.
