The Stolen Moans – Bard-Inspired Chaos, Treachery & Heartbreak (2024)
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, The Stolen Moans were born from the remnants of musical projects creating an insatiable genre-diverse group. Combining music influences and experiences, the DIY trio saunter from indie-rock to pop-punk, metal, alternative rock and post-punk. All gothic, nocturnal, filled with dark punk-influenced insanity, The Stolen Moans are the sound of the future pulling from the sound of the past. This is our introduction to the band, but the award-winning artist was formed in 2018; then again, joining now is better late than never. The latest addition to their decadent discography is the single ‘Bard-Inspired Chaos, Treachery & Heartbreak’.
Following the critically acclaimed single ‘Dada Catapult’, The Stolen Moans hit you in the chest with pure, unadulterated punk ferocity in ‘Bard-Inspired Chaos, Treachery & Heartbreak’. Just as ‘Dada Catapult’ is tumultuous, the new single presents with such a rage of turbulence it will send you spinning about lost in a kaleidoscopic rush of powerful music. Alright, the spinning might not be literal but considering ‘Bard-Inspired Chaos, Treachery & Heartbreak’ is ideal for mosh pits, at least one person could find themselves lost in the mosh madness.
Unlike ‘Dada Catapult’, ‘Bard-Inspired Chaos, Treachery & Heartbreak’ is sinister and slightly sneaky in its delivery. Dark and creepy, the opening is a hushed veil of hard rock… then it gets real. A roaring combination of Chane’s scorching guitar and Eric’s pounding drums, the single lies somewhere between contemporary alternative rock and classic punk. Interestingly, while Vivian’s vocals lead the brashness of Chane and Eric in the background, her abrupt grittiness is met with a warm, rich undertone.
One element I find intriguing is how the studio single captures the power of live performances in its sophisticatedly raw production. Living by the creed of “no-nonsense songcraft and playful experimentation…”, The Stolen Moans are brutally eclectic but welcomingly honest.
