The Starkillers – Are You Thinking Of Me (2022)

Promising a sound of refreshing individuality in the indie music scene, The Starkillers are a band sparking passion in anyone listening to their music. Formed in 2020, although the foursome had been bandmates and friends for years before, The Starkillers are enthusiastic, engaging and, well, passionate. Despite having only one single under their belt, the group is already featuring on notable blogs like Edgar Allan Poets, Rising Artists Blog and Less Than 1000 Followers. Come with us as we dive into their debut single ‘Are You Thinking Of Me’ – metaphorical diving, of course.

Openly influenced by acts like The Killers, Walk The Moon and Foo Fighters, ‘Are You Thinking Of Me’ is a mishmash of alt-rock and indie-rock with some light pop vibes. A nod to the 90s rock scene, there is a reminiscence of Good Charlotte and Weezer in the tune; however, the nostalgic sound is interspersed with contemporary indie edginess. A melodic combination of powerful guitars and pounding drums tips you into a sonic whirlpool, but it is the harmonic fusion in this arrangement that sends bright lights flitting before your eyes.

While the melody is enchanting, Jon Omen’s vocals seem to add that extra sense of nostalgia. Warm, bold and rich, but with some gruffness in the mix, Omen’s dulcet tones comfortably embrace your soaring soul. Then again, it is not only Omen’s voice that encapsulates the warmth of the track; rather all four playing together and the light “ooo’s” in the song.

Exploring human life in its entirety, The Starkillers have a penchant for expressing vulnerability, fragility and perseverance in their sophisticated sound. ‘Are You Thinking Of Me’ looks at relationships and, as the lads put it, “…come to the realisation that it isn’t what they want or need…that the relationship is one-sided and might always be if they stay with that person.” Unfortunately, a relatable issue for most people, but at least you know there are people out there who connect through the message – even if you feel a little isolated when it happens to you.
