The Spiritual Leaders – The Last Sunset (2023)
If Manic Street Preachers were to have a child with Radiohead, but it was raised by The Smiths, the chances are high it would be The Spiritual Leaders. Hailing from Cavan County, Ireland, David Reilly (vocals and guitar), Fergus Brady (vocals, guitar, bass and synths), and Cathal Brady (drums) have a unique sound that is quite difficult to define. I could call them post-punk or alternative rock, perhaps a taste of grunge or new wave; however, overall, the lads are just not to be pigeon-holed. So, come with us as we take a gander at their music and perhaps you could choose a label.
Already featured on The Other Side Reviews, The Spiritual Leaders have turned our heads with their intriguing music. Yet, we are not the only heads being turned our audiences being won over. From Indie Chronique to Rising Artists Blog, Find No Enemy, Illustrate Magazine and various playlists, The Spiritual Leaders are garnering an international following – and a positive one at that. In fact, they have been described as “…something wholly different…” (Find No Enemy) and “…unique and thought-provoking artistry” (Karl Is My Unkle). The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The Last Sunset’.
Following their well-received track ‘Hall of Mirrors’, The Spiritual Leaders adopt a soul-stirring fusion of guitars, drums and synths in ‘The Last Sunset’. With a strong synth-inspired sound, ‘The Last Sunset’ is a sublime swirl of music in which you can easily become lost. Interestingly enough, while the instrumentation appears to have that “mushed together” haziness, it is Reilly’s vocal execution that takes the song to another dimension with clarity. As with ‘Hall of Mirrors’ there is a nostalgic tinge to ‘The Last Sunset’, but this new song appears to bring a contemporary post-punk edginess to the fore.
One of the most intriguing and innovative aspects of The Spiritual Leaders is their way of aligning melodies with lyrical concepts. The band explains that ‘The Last Sunset’ is “…a reflection on the late night wanderings of the mind…” – a theme that is evident in the evocative swirl of music.
