The Silent Era – Heavy Cure (2023)
Performing together in various forms for the last five years (give or take), the quartet The Silent Era only really came about in the past year. A brand new band created by talented musicians, The Silent Era is something unlike anything you have heard before – bold, unique and oddly intoxicating. With only one release under their name and about 10 gigs, Bri (vocals), Chris (guitars), Nic (bass) and Conor (drums), are making themselves known as an intriguing UK-based alternative rock group.
Described by gig-goers as “…the best thing since Nirvana” and “…nothing like I’ve heard before”, The Silent Era are capturing the hearts of UK audiences; however, they are also turning heads via other means. I’m not talking about the group walking about lassoing listeners – although that would be an interesting sight. I’m speaking about them hitting the blogosphere and airwaves with coverage from York Calling, Rock Era Magazine, and Decay FM. Come with us as we delve into their debut single ‘Heavy Cure’.
Influenced by the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, Garbage, Placebo and Deftones, The Silent Era have a deep, dark sound nodding to the sounds of the 90s. Interestingly enough, while there is a strong Garbage meets Placebo tone to the group’s music, a modern-day edginess usurps the nostalgic throwback to the post-punk of yesteryear. The intriguing vocals bring a “light and dark” element to the track, particularly with Bri hitting those hard rock high notes before letting you drop into the swooning melody.
The vocals are awesome and all, but the melody of ‘Heavy Cure’ can undoubtedly hold its own. The fusion of guitars, bass and drums presents a bit of distortion while retaining a smooth melding of the sounds. It’s a little discomforting if you aren’t expecting anything unusual, but then again, the unusuality makes The Silent Era stand out in the crowd.
As I mentioned, the melody can hold its own, but it is the message that highlights the band’s depth. The Silent Era explain that ‘Heavy Cure’ is “basically a barb at the media’s kinda creepy obsession with youth. It seems that once you get past 25 you have nothing to offer creatively and it’s an issue that’s plagued the music industry in particular. It’s why women like Madonna try to defy the odds to look 24 at age 64…we’re done with that shit.”
