The Rapports – Dreamer (2020)
Fusing the intimacy of Coldplay with the power of Oasis, The Rapports is an evocative indie-rock quartet. Hailing from Brighton, the UK-based foursome bring an original, heartwarming sound to the modern indie scene. Forming in 2016 and releasing well-received original material, The Rapports began to build a reputation for engaging lyricism over catchy melodies. Working with some of the most well-known producers, such as Andrew Lyden (U2, Buzzcocks, Bob Marley) and Sie Medway-Smith (Rita Ora, Depeche Mode, Massive Attack), the group’s music shows an air of maturity and innovation. The latest addition to their critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘Dreamer’
Bringing the Britpop and indie-rock sounds of the 1990s into the 21st century, The Rapports show their originality in ‘Dreamer’. While a steady track with strong instrumentation, ‘Dreamer’ is whimsical with an almost otherworldly ambience. Breathy but bold, Thomas Skilton’s vocals enhance the sincerity of this melancholic track – or at least my ears take away a resigned romanticism in the lyrics. It is quite difficult to adequately describe ‘Dreamer’ and give it its full credit, but the best I can come up with is haunting, ethereal and soul-stirring.
Described by the band as a “seductive slice of indie-pop with shoegaze melodies and raw vocals to keep you daydreaming”, The Rapports deliver a lighthearted single with reflective nostalgia. As I type this at 6 in the morning, I find myself appreciating the delicacy and elegance of ‘Dreamer’ and The Rapports.
