The Pulltops – Wide Awake (2023)
From their debut album 8-Track in 2022 to the single ‘Wide Awake’ in 2023, US-based duo The Pulltops have entertained audiences for over 20 years. Yep, that’s 20 years of astounding music and they don’t look a day over 30. A pair of record collectors, they immediately bonded over a passion for music bringing together diverse influences and tastes. While Tom Crowell (guitar) might have leant toward the underground scene and Mark Pierret (drums) leaning toward old country and soul, the lads blend elements of these genres to form an innovative, versatile and eclectic sound.
We were introduced to The Pulltops earlier this year and have been caught in their sonic spiderweb of stupendous music ever since. Following the six-track EP Between The Lines, ‘Wide Awake’ steps out as a heavier single as compared to ‘Stronger’ and ‘Better Life’. While a reminiscence of Depeche Mode is evident in previous material, ‘Wide Awake’ is more direct, abrupt and bold. The nostalgic air of 80s rock lingers; however, the pair breathe life into an old-school sound with contemporary rock tones. Perhaps this is an evolution in The Pulltops’ style?
Matching pounding drums with a hard-hitting guitar, ‘Wide Awake’ shakes you awake with the melody. Sophisticated, no doubt, The Pulltops show elegance and skill in the single’s production. The thing is, just as there is maturity to the arrangement, a ruggedness filters into the soundscape bringing a raw honesty and innocent grit to the table. The bold vocals flow through the melody bringing a mellifluous tone to the track but also increasing its gruff nature.
The melody alone is a gem of alternative rock, but it is the poetic lyricism that captures the core of the electrifying release. The Pulltops explain: “’Wide Awake’ is more than just a song; it’s an anthem for those who are ready to take charge of their lives and overcome obstacles…highlighting the empowerment that comes from embracing newfound confidence and expression…”
Bursting with a passion for life, hopefulness and empowering ferocity, I can see ‘Wide Awake’ becoming a firm favourite for anyone who listens to The Pulltops.
