The Pulltops – Stronger (2023)

For just over two decades, US-based The Pulltops have been sharing their eclectic blend of pop, indie-rock and soul with the masses. It’s true that the lads had a hiatus from 2008 and 2016 and 2018 to 2023 (at least regarding releases according to Spotify) but considering how fantastic they are the music covers the divides. Drawing together the natural talent of guitarist Tom Crowell and drummer Mark Pierret, The Pulltops have been described as “…the musical equivalent of a personal message on a greeting card” (Indie Music Flix), “…comforting…” (Obscure Sound), and “…pull it all off with authenticity and zeal.” (Night Times). The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Stronger’.

Hot on the heels of their track ‘Seasons Change’, ‘Stronger’ has a toe-tapping quality to the song; however, it retains a sense of poignancy throughout the melody. Unlike the rock-influenced heaviness of ‘Seasons Change’, The Pulltops adopt a lighter sound in this new single. Leaning toward indie-rock but with a bit of an “electronic-cy” quality (courtesy of the synths), there is an intricate fusion of sounds and styles in ‘Stronger’. Moreover, a contemporary feel oozes from ‘Stronger’ with a flair of nostalgic pop sentimentalities making the song rather edgy.

Despite being lighter than previous work, there appears to be some darkness in this moving melody – a melancholic quality both lyrically and melodically. Touching on the topic of Imposter Syndrome, ‘Stronger’ has a sense of despair, vulnerability, frustration and fear. Yet, while the tune elegantly captures the more desperate side of things, it is also hopeful, optimistic and empowering. The Pulltops explain that ‘Stronger’ “…takes a look past our insecurities to our inner strength. Imposter Syndrome can be crippling, and this song was a way to talk us out of that mindset and into something more positive.”

Sincere and sentimental, The Pulltops explore human fragility in a powerful, heart-warming way.
