The Pulltops – Red Eye Open Sky (2024)

Sonic alchemists – that’s what The Pulltops are. With their experimental eclecticism and obscure innovation, the US-based duo draw together dabs and dobs of different genres in an unconventional sonic concoction. Founded by musicians Tom Crowell (guitar) and Mark Pierret (drums), the pair join diverse experiences, tastes and influences in a shining sound that is entirely The Pulltops. Already a fan-favourite at The Other Side Reviews, Crowell and Pierret continue to astound us with each new single. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Red Eye Open Sky’.

Following their well-received singles ‘Ain’t Home Anymore’ and ‘Mission Control’, ‘Red Eye Open Sky’ breathes life into vintage indie-rock with alternative rock sounds clinging to its sides. When I think vintage, I tend to imagine stuff from the 60s and 70s – showing my age, I suppose – but the 90s fall into retro status, and the power of 90s rock flows in ‘Red Eye Open Sky’. Interestingly, while a shiver of Foo Fighters links with Radiohead in the new track, The Pulltops add contemporary edginess to the melody offering familiarity with refreshing newness.

A laidback tune with infectious tendrils grabbing you from all sides, Crowell and Pierret combine drums, guitar and rich vocals in a harmonic symphony. Smooth and warm, ‘Red Eye Open Sky’ is the song for a road-trip where you sing along with enthusiasm. I find this particularly intriguing as it so perfectly aligns with the theme of the track. The Pulltops explain:

“’Red Eye Open Sky’ captures the haunting experience of light-night solitude on the open road, where every mile brings you closer to love yet reminds you of the emptiness left behind. With lyrics that explore longing, reflection, and the passage of time, the song paints a vivid picture of a “lonely satellite” navigating endless highways. Ultimately, the destination holds the promise of peace and reconnection.”
