The Project – Over You (2023)
If you happen to be a fan of the 00s hard rock band Shameless, then The Project should excite you. If you happen to have never heard of the 00s hard rock band Shameless, then The Project should excite you as well. Personally, I fall in the latter group (my favourite groups in the early 21st century weren’t exactly hard rock), but my interest was piqued even without knowing about the link to Shameless.
Alright, so what am I talking about? I’m talking about the new supergroup The Project; the brainchild of Shameless’ lead guitarist James Davis. After establishing an international following and winning several awards throughout the mid-2000s with Shameless, Davis is exploring new styles beyond the heaviness of hard rock. Sauntering across the realm of rock, The Project brings out the best of pop-rock, classic rock, alternative rock, and even a slash of metal in the mix. Come with us as we delve into The Project’s latest release, ‘Over You’.
Following their debut single ‘Best Days’, a song that inserted a hint of Sabbath into 90s pop-rock, ‘Over You’ is a nostalgic blend of alternative rock with pop-rock clinging to the wrapper. As with ‘Best Days’, this sophomore track is a blast of rock screaming from your speakers boldly sauntering into your ears. From the outset, pounding drums match a scorching guitar embracing the core of rock music; however, a leaning toward lighter pop sentimentality skips through with the solid vocals of Jeff Plant (also previously of Shameless). Interestingly, just as with ‘Best Days’, shards of hard rock glint through pop-rock casing. In this case, however, the crisp definition between poppy stuff and heavier things blurs coming together in a harmonic melody.
Taken from the upcoming album Best Days, ‘Over You’ is gruff and gritty given the pounding drums, scorching guitar and Plant’s bold vocals. Yet, just as it is gruff there is elegance in the single giving you taps of rawness slipping through a sophisticated sound. A step back in time but with the finesse of modern-day production.
For me, the song brought back memories of mosh pits, fist-pumping festivals, screaming at the top of your lungs at a gig, and that wonderfully exhausted feeling afterwards. I might not have known about Shameless but I’m over the moon about knowing The Project.
