The Oxford Drive Band – Long Way Home (2022)

Described by Sinusoidal Music as a band where “…listening to their music is a scrapbook of memories and wonderful experiences”, The Oxford Drive Band can ensnare your senses in a sentimental way. Headed by singer-songwriter Marian Godwin (vocals and rhythm guitar), the US-based group returns with their new single ‘Long Way Home’. Already praised by notable blogs like Sinusoidal Music, Loud Hacker, Roadie Music, Edgar Allan Poets and Info Music, the folk-inspired collective is turning heads on an international level.

Moving from the track ‘Hymn To My Republic’ (released in 2021), The Oxford Band Drive makes its Spotify debut with ‘Long Way Home’. Unlike the previous track, ‘Long Way Home’ adopts a more old-school folk sound filled with intense intimacy. I’m not by any means implying that their earlier work has no depth; it’s merely this song has a Joni Mitchell vibe instead of bluesy Carole King.

A stripped-back sound with acoustic guitars wrapping themselves around you like a sonic blanket, ‘Long Way Home’ shows the beauty of minimalism. Alongside the guitars, The Oxford Drive Band introduce steady drums that not only bring depth to the song but seem to act as a heartbeat in this musical journey. One of Godwin’s most impressive skills is her superb storytelling. Brutally honest with a tinge of tenderness, she highlights her human fragility and vulnerability.

Along with the eclectic vocals and harmonic movements, The Oxford Drive Band hit the proverbial nail on the head once more with ‘Long Way Home’. Bold, rich and sincere, this track seeps into your soul, sends chills down your spine, but also leaves you in a comfortable bubble of sound.
