The Other Colors – Oups (2022)

French electronic band The Other Colors is back with a darker edge to their sound in ‘Oups’. The single brings their dancing melodic flows to French vocals that are packed with intelligent humour and an avant-garde flair. The experimental edge of the music merges with the synthwave flows as the vocals inject the need to dance directly into your veins.

A rather quirky single, it takes various elements of electronic pop and fuses them to a baseline of pure dance for something wonderfully unique. This sound comes from the musical brains of Marie Möör and Laurent Chambert who are both known for their distinctive musical styles and have been unleashing their unique sound since 2007. If this version of the single leaves you wanting more, there is an extended version available on Pianity.

‘Oups’ hits you with a melodic yet slightly quirky movement from the first note. The flow of the beats is fairly stable, only to stumble and leave you floundering at times. There are a lot of different electronic tones that make their way over the beats, bringing a kaleidoscope of colours both light and dark. There are moments when the melody moves to just an off-kilter beat, before rising into a more melodic flow. This melody is a masterclass of quirky and avant-garde tones coming together for an engaging movement. The higher tones that warble into the soundscape have an edge of darkness to them that enhances the rather odd nature of the track. You never quite know what is going to happen and this uncertainty keeps you hooked to the track. There is something in the electronic notes that speaks to your spirit, calling for you to venture further into the darkness that rests in the low levels.

The quirky movements of the melody get you moving slightly to the music, but it is Möör’s vocals that really hit you with the dancing vibes. Her voice calls out against the opening beats, tapping you on your shoulders, and gesturing for you to head down the path of the track. The vocals are in French which cause a slight barrier in the true understanding of the track, but the expressive flow of the performance helps you overcome this to an extent. You can feel the movement into the darkness as well as the sparkle of lighter tones through the delivery. There is something about her performance that merges with the beats and turns into the urge to move to the single.

Using avant-garde electronic flows to their full potential, The Other Colors pulls you onto a path that potentially leads to untold darkness in ‘Oups’. The quirky flow of the melody constantly keeps you guessing as you never know what is going to happen next. Möör’s vocals help to break down the language barrier through her performance, while fusing with the beats to get you moving.
