The Numb Project – Busted (2023)

For just over a decade, producer Chris Calarco has been entertaining the masses with his rhythmic, emotional and lush trip-hop style. Performing under the moniker The Numb Project, Calarco won’t exactly numb you nor is he a numbing artist, but he can leave you breathless with the lush melodies. From his debut album Soundbridge Sessions to singles ‘Samuel’ and ‘Shakermaker’, the US-based artist has garnered a loyal following among listeners; however, it is not only listeners who are paying attention. With coverage from notable blogs, playlists and radio stations, he is turning the heads of curators on an international scale. Come with us as we dip our toes into his latest release, ‘Busted’.

Following his four-track EP Abstract Facts and single ‘Shakermaker’, ‘Busted’ is The Numb Project’s third release in 2023. Similar to ‘Shakermaker’, the new single has an upbeat, toe-tapping sound; however, it is also smoother, more soothing and flowing than previous material.

As if placing our ears on a comfortable sonic mattress, a synth-driven tone flows throughout the single but, while it gives an embracing warmth, various elements add an intricate rhythm. Bold beats puncture the sliver of synths as lighter EDM tones drift in giving the track an edge. A keyboard flits in and out with a mild piano twinkling only to be dosed with hard-hitting electronica.

Soft and chilled, ‘Busted’ is quite laidback with a little shiver of RnB warmth tinged around the edges. Yet, it is also bold and edgy travelling from mellifluous to bouncing brashness in its complex harmonies. For me, it encapsulates various emotions from a tender lash of love to a pinch of raw vulnerability – all coursing through our veins with kaleidoscopic vibrancy.
