The Northern Light – Waiting For The Flood (2022)

When we look at all the youngsters rising in the ranks of the music industry, it can a bit overwhelming if you’re not so young but still making music. Not that being more mature is a bad thing, but it can make you feel like “I’m too old for this shit” sometimes – trust me on that. However, with age comes experience and US-based The Northern Light is all about sharing their knowledge and experience with listeners. Formed in 2015 (give or take a couple of years), David Pollon (vocals and guitar), Carl Larsson (bass) and Kip Rondorf (drums) have gained a reputation for engaging and emotional music. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Waiting For The Flood’.

Influenced by the likes of Neil Young, The Northern Light does have a lighter feel about its indie-rock sound. However, inspiration from Jane’s Addiction and Rush brings a heavier, harder tinge to their music. Following their single ‘Tribes’, ‘Waiting For The Flood’ is a powerful contemporary rock song but with a nostalgic flair leaning toward the 90s alt-rock scene.

Not only does the combination of dynamic guitars and pounding drums make for a fierce tune, but the interplay and placement of instrumentation show sophisticated melodic arrangement. Moving from softer tones to harder, more full-bodied choruses, the guitars and drums take you on a sonic rollercoaster. Pollon’s impressive guitar solo carries you through the bridge bringing back the power of old-school rock tones.

While the melody can hold its own sending your soul soaring, The Northern Light showcase further depth in their lyricism. Touching on the themes of regret, frustration and fear of the future, ‘Waiting For The Flood’ connects with audiences on an intimate level. The band explain that ‘Waiting For The Flood’ “…is based on holding on too long to truths that must be spoken. Running away and burying those unspoken truths leads to a flood that delivers disaster whether personally or in our society and environment.”

A song with a message and one hell of a melody, The Northern Light captured my heart with ‘Waiting For The Flood’.
