The Northern Light – Secrets (2025)

Often described as “…having a nostalgic sound that is influenced by artists such as Neil Young, RUSH and Dinosaur Jr…”, US-based The Northern Light has that wonderfully old-school sound dragging up memories of yesteryear. Yet, as much as there is nostalgia, The Northern Light add modern-day edginess to their music transcending decades, generations, and giving their eclectic style, sounds. No newbies to The Northern Light, the threesome captivated us several years ago with their single, ‘Waiting For The Flood’. Join us as we delve into their most recent release, ‘Secrets’.

Following the well-received track ‘People of the Snake’, ‘Secrets’ is a sonic wave of classic rock rushing past your face and ruffling your hair. Yet, just as the single is alternative rock-driven, there is the sentimentality of indie-rock fluttering amidst the crashing drums, bold bass and soaring guitar. Recorded at Seattle’s Temple of the Trees and Orbit Radio, ‘Secrets’ showcases the sophistication of the band’s composition and production; however, while maturity shines through, there is a breath of playful brashness locked in the rollercoaster sound.

As veteran artists, David Pollon (vocals and guitar), Carl Larsson (bass and synths), and Kip Rondorf (drums) have developed an understanding of music and emotion over time. In ‘Secrets’, and other The Northern Light songs, the music mastery shines through. Demure and hushed, Pollon’s vocals whisper in the melody; but, despite its subdued execution, the lyrics ushered forth add powerful weightiness to a melodically powerful tune.

Penned “in one sitting in a park in Bayfield, Ontario on the shore of Lake Huron…”, ‘Secrets’ was borne from a moment of inspiration. With a sense of clarity, awareness, and some dip of philosophical insight, it explores the grandness of memories. The Northern Light explains:

“’Secrets’ is a song about the power of places. With the passage of time the memories, tragedies, triumphs of individuals, families and entire people can become imprinted in the stones under our feet. If we listen carefully, we can hear the stories… if only one cares to quietly listen.”
