The Midnight Vortex – Come & Play (2023)

If you enjoy the music of Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age, Heart and Stone Temple Pilots, then you’ll love the sounds of London-based The Midnight Vortex. Drawn together by a mutual love of blues-rock and grunge, The Midnight Vortex offer audiences a raw, heartfelt, pulsating ferocity in their unique tones. Establishing themselves as a confident, enthralling live band, the fivesome enchant listeners at their gigs; however, critical acclaim and a growing fanbase reach far beyond the popular London venues. Featured on The Metal Asylum, The Real Ding, Sinusoidal Music, The Musical Road, Rock Noticias, Headbangers News and Lost In The Manor (to name a few), The Midnight Vortex is gaining global recognition.

In an interview with RGM, The Midnight Vortex shared they are “a diverse bunch, we’re all Londoners now, but we’re from all over…” – it is this diversity that makes the band stand out. Following their tracks ‘Addicted To You’ and ‘Run’, the group weaves grunge tones into hard rock sonic tapestry with ‘Come & Play’. Pounding drums play alongside scorching guitars as Bri Macanas’ enchanting vocals bring a tinge of blues to the heavy rock track.

One intriguing factor of ‘Come & Play’ is how all instruments come together in a united rush of music but they each have an independent contribution to the track. A thrilling guitar trill teeters on the edge of the song with a piercing slide while the pounding drums thrash along carrying a relentless angst in the melody. When you feel at the peak of the rollercoaster, a sudden drop sends you spiralling down into a delicate bluesy dip only to be thrown up into the hard-hitting rock once again.

Just as the melody can send shivers down your spine, the theme of the track is as moving. Delving into the sensitive theme of mental health, the heavy single “creates an eerie and unhinged sonic experience…the lyrics unveil the profound impact of gaslighting and manipulation on well-being.” Interestingly, while the poetic lyricism and bold arrangement capture the fear, frustration and need to scream out in a desperate sense of rage, ‘Come & Play’ also offers a sincere representation of the empowering side of mental health. The Midnight Vortex explain that “as the song unfolds, a glimmer of defiance emerges reflecting inner strength…”
