The Midnight Vortex – Addicted To You (2023)

While The Midnight Vortex came together in 2022 when Leo Kuma replaced Rabie as drummer – for personal reasons and a very amicable leaving of the band – the group technically originated in late-2020. It began with jam sessions where Danny Sands (bass), Mouad Qach (lead guitar), and ex-drummer Rabie polished off old material and played about with new sounds. In mid-2021, Robin Thunders joined as a guitarist and ultimately, Qach handed over his lead vocalist duties to Bri Macanas. Kuma appeared and hey presto, we have The Midnight Vortex.

Hot on the heels of their well-received single ‘Run’, the group released a new song ‘Addicted To You’. Recorded at Super Symmetry Studios with producer William Robertson (engineering, mixing and production), ‘Addicted To You’ combines pounding drums with hard-hitting guitars across a heavy rock foundation. Inspired by acts like Stone Temple Pilots, Led Zeppelin, Queens of the Stone Age and Nirvana, there is a grittiness existing in the melody. Interestingly, the well-textured and layered arrangement allows each instrument prominence before drawing it all together in an outstanding blast of sound.

What I find intriguing is how The Midnight Vortex explores different flavours of rock with classic rock guitars adding an old-school tinge to the bold tune. The drums, in all their heart-pumping glory, slice through with an alternative rock-inspired blast. Yet, it is Macanas’ vocals that add a true griminess and head-spinning darkness to ‘Addicted To You’. Her powerful execution brings a sense of melodic metal to the song hitting you between the eyes.

Known for their electric performances, ‘Addicted To You’ captures the fury of live shows within an in-studio recording. Not only that, but the single elegantly captures the haunting but hard-hitting theme of ‘Addicted To You’.

“It’s about deep infatuation, lust and longing and how being obsessed with someone can feel like addiction to a drug – you can’t help yourself from chasing that delirious euphoria and you feel hopeless and empty without it…” – The Midnight Vortex on ‘Addicted To You’
