The Mess:Age – HIS RETURN (2024)
While The Mess:Age is an eclectic mish-mash of “what the eff” and “wow, that’s good” melodic eccentricities, there is one element that sticks in my brain whenever I hear their songs – the overwhelming flux of Nostradamus and Getafix twirling about poetic lyricism and evocative music. What am I talking about, I hear you say. It’s the aptly named The Mess:Age drawing together the grittiness lingering in uncertain societies with sonic flair… a message if you will. Today, we’re taken on another journey, given another message with the single ‘HIS RETURN’.
Hot on the heels of the well-received singles ‘FAMOUS FRIEND’ and ‘HEART OF STONE’, ‘HIS RETURN’ led out of 2024 with a roll of rock music. Unlike ‘FAMOUS FRIEND’ which really rocked our eardrums, ‘HIS RETURN’ takes a softer, deeper, more soulful approach. Self-recorded and produced by Ziggy – the person behind the moniker – this new single captures the heaviness of classic rock; however, a sonic veil subdues what could be a powerful rush of hard rock. By no means is this a judgement or complaint, it is actually an exciting change showcasing the softer side of loud, brash The Mess:Age.
Roaming the realm of David Bowie-esque obscurity, ‘HIS RETURN’ is a rush of nostalgic oddness that either sits well or not at all. I find its off-kilter oscillation between hushed and bold, confident and vulnerable, and fragile and powerful rather entertaining… no, belay that, it’s highly entertaining, emotional and profound. Interestingly, the link to yesteryear aligns with the timeless theme. The theme: social conflict, tragedy, and the lingering approach of existential doom.
Self-described as one of a “…powerful non-violent weapon within the vibrational realms of reality…”, The Mess:Age weaves music and reality to overcome global challenges with a hypnotic tune. With the promise of upcoming albums later in 2025, I am eager to hear more from The Mess:Age, but until then I have all his work, including ‘HIS RETURN’, to enjoy.
