Charles Bronson, The Rolling Stones, Nostradamus, even Asterix and Obelix’s Getafix all rambling about my brain at the moment. Why, I hear you ask. Well, it’s all because of The Mess:Age and their new single ‘FAMOUS FRIEND’. By no means does it actually feature even a mention of any of these characters. It’s all about the theme and underlying stuff lingering in their track’s rock-tinged melody. Come with us as we delve into The Mess:Age’s single ‘FAMOUS FRIEND’.
Despite having crossed our ears only once with the well-received ‘MR W.H.O’, UK-based The Mess:Age has branded its name on our brains. Not literally, of course, but the sound of this pioneering group is so infectious, unforgettable and insatiable, that you can’t get enough. Recorded in East London by members Glen Brandon “Ziggy” (vocals and drums), Paul Gold (bass) and Jaime Page (guitar), ‘FAMOUS FRIEND’ is a rock-flavoured concoction of crashing drums, bold bass and soaring guitars. Bringing a strong classic rock tone, the threesome breathes life into the 70s rock sounds; however, an alternative rock edginess sprinkles contemporary vibes in the old-school groove.
Linked as an inspiration to their new single, ‘FAMOUS FRIEND’ grabs the raw essence of Charles Bronson’s film Death Wish II and The Rolling Stones’ song ‘Brown Sugar’, then twirls it into a song of reality with a prophecy that actually came to fruition. An intimate narrative of that typical tale where people gain fame, live in a world of excess, lose their friends and find themselves in a mire of loss, ‘FAMOUS FRIEND’ is a warning to musicians hoping for success. Glen Brandon “Ziggy” took the story and considered its consequences, then he predicted his friendships would remain strong when everyone came out on the other side; the friendship between Gold and Brandon is as strong as ever.
