The Marsh Family – Cool Kid (2024)
In a time when the world needed some joy, The Marsh Family brought a light of optimism, hope and just plain fun to a Covid-19 locked-down world. With their parody videos and smile-inducing melodies, the UK-based family (yep, they are family) made the worries disappear, even if it was only for a few minutes. Skip ahead a few years and the six-piece continues to entertain audiences with their satirical songs about significant life events. In the well-received single ‘Biological Clock’, the group tackled menopause with a groovy vibe; today, we take a gander at their new single ‘Cool Kid’.
Following the critically acclaimed singles ‘The Bubble Song’ and ‘If That Day Comes Round’, ‘Cool Kid’ is the first studio single from The Marsh Family. While the sophistication of a studio production burns bright in ‘Cool Kid’, the track retains a whimsical sense of homegrown authenticity.
Powerful and bold, but with a subdued laidback groove, ‘Cool Kid’ is a harmonic twirl of funk-driven drums, guitars and, of course, horns. Almost wrapped in kaleidoscopic velvet, there is a warm comfort in the track; however, just as the rich melody brings comfort, it tackles a pricklier issue – bullying and insecurity. An age-old situation where you want to be the cool kid at school is greatly amplified by social media-influenced perfection. Back in my day, and I never thought I’d say that, impressing the popular group meant keeping up with trends; nowadays, it’s a battle keeping up with Instagram fuelled by constant pressure. 14-year-old Ella explains:
“I guarantee when people hear this song, a name will spring to mind of a person that made them feel this way when they were young. We want the song to take you somewhere different, cos it’s easy to obsess about those people or try to fit around them… it’s better to leave them to one side and not change who you are too much.”
In addition to the single, The Marsh Family released an official music video for ‘Cool Kid’. You can view the video below or via their YouTube channel.
