When I think of family singers, I immediately think of The Jackson 5, Hanson and the Von Trapp Family Singers from The Sound of Music. Little did I know there is a modern-day equivalent coming in the form of The Marsh Family. Bringing their passion for music to their children, Ben Marsh and Danielle Marsh have raised Alfie, Thomas, Ella and Tess in a world of sound. Now, their passion for music has reached the ears of the masses after the family released pandemic parody songs on YouTube – and they happened to go viral. Some of their biggest hits were ‘One Day More’, ‘Have The New Jab’ and ‘Totally Fixed Where We Are’.
Along with their strong online following, The Marsh Family is reaching international audiences with features on Send Me Your Ears, Motion News, New York Times, Edgar Allan Poets, OK! Hot on the heels of ‘We’ll Have To Wait For Sue Gray’s Inquiry’, the UK-based group bring old-school funk to the 21st century with ‘Biological Clock’. Immediately taking me back to the years of Motown, The Marsh Family have you tapping your toe and swaying along to the track from the first note. Filled with groovy vibes, the textured melodic arrangement draws together drums, guitars and horns in a head-swirling tune. Moving from the folksy ‘We’ll Have To Wait For Sue Gray’s Inquiry’ to groovy funk, The Marsh Family showcases innovation and versatility as artists.
What I find intriguing about ‘Biological Clock’ is not the old-school funk with contemporary jazz edges, but the incorporation of a serious message in a jovial melody. Looking at the touchy subject of menopause, ‘Biological Clock’ exposes the symptoms of this rite of passage. From mood swings to hot flushes and even insomnia, ‘Biological Clock’ tells us all about the frustration of menopause while keeping it all chilled. Personally, I don’t understand why people avoid speaking about menopause, but this amusing rendition of what happens during this time makes it more enjoyable…I mean, sharing information, not menopause itself. Although, no more periods is kind of appealing.
Engaging, intriguing and a bundle of fun, The Marsh Family bring sincerity to our ears with their take on menopause in ‘Biological Clock’.
