The Mars McClanes – The Worriers (2022)

The Mars McClanes are bringing a very interesting cautionary song to our ears with their single ‘The Worriers’. Inspired by listening to elderly people obsess over their regrets, the single considers that the biggest regrets are the chances we fail to take. This has resulted in a single that is a cautionary tale for all the people who are overly cautious in their decisions.

While the band are not newcomers to the music scene, they are still coming off a hiatus, with this track being the follow-up to their debut. The band originally hit the music scene in 2001, unleashing love-gone-wrong songs for all to hear, only to go their separate ways. Coming back together in 2020, their music has taken on a different edge with the weight of life experiences behind them.

‘The Worriers’ hits the ground running with a rather addictive rock movement. There is a slight stop-start movement to the opening line that adds this flair of funkiness to the sound. It also increases the texture of the melody while getting your feet tapping to the beats. The somewhat quirky vibes of the music lead you to the steady flow of the chorus that allows the vocals to rise. The layers of sound are wonderful as you have the drums pushing you forward through the single, only to have guitars tumble over the top line. You never quite know what the guitars are going to do and this brings a lively vibe to the single that easily puts a smile on your face. As you listen to the melody, you can’t help but move in some way to the sound.

While you are getting into the melody, the vocals pull you into the cautionary message of the track with a rock-pop flair. The lyrics have a reflective feeling in the verses that lead to the message of the chorus. There is a lot packed into the lyrics that leave you thinking about life, the decisions we make and the chances we are missing by being cautious. This message has been packed into an enjoyable package as the vocals carry a hook that make you want to sing along, particularly on the chorus. Later in the track, the vocals get a bounce, before coming down for some important sharing of thoughts.

The Mars McClanes have a cautionary tale for those who are cautious in the decisions they make, wrapped in the engaging rock-pop flow of ‘The Worriers’. The melody grabs your attention from the first stop-start movement and only becomes better as the guitars tumble through the top line. The vocals move from reflective to a warning, leaving you with a lot to think about.
