The Mars McClanes – Day Is Done (2022)

Described by Find No Enemy as evocative, vibrant and quaint (I paraphrase), The Mars McClanes is an indie-rock group with a unique sound for the masses. Already featured on our website, we are no strangers to The Mars McClanes and, well, we love ‘em. We are not the only ones to sing praises as the US-based trio has featured on various blogs, playlists and radio stations.

Formed approximately 20 years ago, The Mars McClanes were building a loyal following with merely an intrepid booking agent, fresh merch, one gig per week, and a presence on the veteran social media platform MySpace. Fast-forward several years with a bit of hiatus and we find the lads reconvening in 2020 with “scar tissue from divorces, war deployments, and life’s assorted curveballs” proving that something good can never be utterly ignored. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘Day Is Done’.

Penned as a tribute to life lessons, The Mars McClanes explain that ‘Day Is Done’ “is about that moment in your 20s when you finally understand that love you earn over time beats the kind you rush into.” Some might question this saying that the spontaneity of love at first sight and rushed relationships can be exhilarating. Sure, but think about it; love you earn and build over time will always stand the test of time unlike those rushed (although lots of fun) relationships.

Recorded at Southern Comfort studios in Nashville, ‘Day Is Done’ is a melodic arrangement of atmospheric guitars, steady drums and bold, rich vocals. Soothing, smooth and soft, the lads lull you into a comfortable kaleidoscopic blanket of sound; however, there are effortless transitions from gentle verses to upbeat choruses as the lads tell us about their life lessons. Following the more high-paced ‘Wherever You Go’, ‘Day Is Done’ has a laidback, chilled-out vibe that you can easily listen to again and again and again…

Sincere, sentimental and tender, The Mars McClanes reflects on love and loss in their intimate single ‘Day Is Done’. I have only one complaint about this single: it’s too short! I cannot wait for more from this talented group of musicians.
