The Marigolds – My Undoing (2022)

While their band name alludes to the soft, pretty marigold flower, the sound of UK-based The Marigolds couldn’t be more contrary. With their bold, powerful, energetic and “in your face” music, the Liverpool trio are described as “blisteringly energetic with intense performances” – a “mixture of Slaves with The Beach Boys…” Formed in 2018, the lads are no newbies to the Liverpool music scene; yet they are on the tip of everyone’s tongues. From Roadie Metal to Local Sound Focus, The Marigolds are reaching international audiences. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘My Undoing’.

Touching on the theme of insecurity, ‘My Undoing’ is potentially The Marigolds’ darkest, most intense, intricate and vulnerable song to date. Produced by Sundown Studios’ Corey Moore, The Marigolds adopt a harsher, more aggressive tone in the new single. As with their previous work ‘Smash and Grab’, there is a scorching rock sound to ‘My Undoing’; however, the punk recklessness woven within classic rock makes this track far more full-on.

Over the past two years, The Marigolds have released three intriguing, intoxicating songs. The thing is, as the years pass the lads show an evolution or honing of their sound. ‘Magnetic’ had a tinge of power-pop in the melody, but now we see a blinding rawness to their music. Reckless, ruthless and head-spinning, ‘My Undoing’ does have an “in your face” brashness; however, there is a vulnerability woven into the kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry. It’s hardly noticeable at first listen, but then you hear the fragility in the lyricism and the theme of “having scary thoughts in the back of your head and feeling unable to break away from negativity in your life…”

Sincere, sentimental and quite complex, ‘My Undoing’ slithers into your brain, rattles about a little, then sends a shock down your spine – but you love every second!
